Kauai, known as "The Garden Isle"
is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is famous for its
pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, dense tropical foliage,
awe-inspiring canyons, and majestic mountain ranges. These
landscapes can be actively enjoyed in activities such as hiking,
surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, deep-sea fishing,
wind surfing, whale watching, golfing, horseback riding, camping,
or just basking in the Pacific sun. The island's relatively
small size makes most activities accessibly by car within
one to two hours.

Beaches
Deciding which beaches to visit might be your most
challenging daily task.
There are swimming beaches, shelling beaches, sunset beaches,
beaches with lots of activity, and beaches where you can be
totally alone. Brennecke's Beach and Poipu Beach Park are
only steps from your Poipu vacation rental. This is one of
Kaua'i's safest beaches, with natural shallows perfect for
young children; snorkeling; swimming; and learning to surf.
There are bathrooms here, picnic tables, pavilions,
showers, lifeguards, and a play area for children.
Boating
To help you explore Kauai's off shore waters and the magical
Napali Coast there are various companies that offer a variety
of boating adventures. There are whale watching, snorkeling
and scuba diving tours and wonderful sunset cruises. These
exciting boating adventures depart from Poipu, Port Allen,
Hanapepe, Lihue and Hanalei.
Fishing
Deep sea fishing charter boats offer half and full day charters,
with all fishing gear included, and are available at Kukiula
Harbor in Poipu, Port Allen, and on The North Shore in Hanalei
Town. All companies offer private and group charters to offshore
areas that are teeming with exciting game fish such as sailfish,
marlin, and yellow fin tuna.

Golfing
There are 7 world class golf courses on Kauai. In Poipu, we
have the Kiahuna 18 hole course, and the Championship Poipu
Bay Resort 18 hole course, home of the PGA Grand Slam. Nearby
Poipu you will find Kukiolono Golf Course located in Kalaheo
and is a delightful 9 hole municipal course that is a favorite
with local players.
In Lihue, the Kauai Lagoons sports an 18 hole, Jack Nicklaus
designed, championship course and Robin Nelson's newly completed
18 hole Puakea
Golf Course.
Wailua is the home of our public 18 hole golf course. On the
North Shore at Princeville, there are 2 courses, the Makai
27 hole course which includes The Lakes, The Ocean & The
Woods and the Prince 18 hole course which is rated #1 in the
State of Hawaii by
Golf Digest.
Helicopters
A helicopter tour is the only way most people can see the
magnificent beauty of Kauai's remote interior. Tours leave
from Hanapepe, and Lihue. There are few experiences that can
match a helicopter flight over the most beautiful island in
the world.
Hiking
The trail head gateway to the Napali Coast is at the end of
the road at Ke'e Beach. A day of hiking into remote Hanakapiai
Valley has been the highlight of many vacations. From the
beach, you can hike to the magnificent Hanakapiai Falls. Short
hikes can be enjoyed from trails beginning above Opaekaa Falls
lookout in Wailua . From The Koke'e Lodge, you can hike several
trails that meander throughout Kauai's ethereal mountain country,
where you will encounter plant and bird species found no where
else on earth.

Horses
There are 3 excellent horseback riding stables on Kauai. CJM
Stables in Poipu offers daily trail rides along the shores
of the remote Mahalepu coastline. On the North Shore at Princeville
both Silver Falls Ranch and Princeville Stables offer 3 hour
trail rides through Kauai's back country to a private waterfall,
for a picnic and a swim.
Kayaking
Good kayaking is the rule in the shoreline waters of Poipu,
Kalihiwai River and Menehune Fish Pond. Both ocean and fresh
water kayaks can be rented in several locations in Koloa Town
and Poipu, and can be easily strapped to the roof of your
car for transport anywhere on the island.
Polo
The Polo field owned by The Kauai Polo Club is located across
from Anini Beach Park, and matches are held each Sunday during
the summer season (July and August) at 4pm. Visitors and locals
alike back up their vehicles to the field to enjoy tail gate
parties with the blue Pacific as a backdrop. This tropical
polo match on a sunny Sunday afternoon will be a fun experience
you will not want to miss.
There is a large, y active social membership and every Sunday
vehicles are backed up to the field, tables and tail gates
are filled with delicious
Surfing
The North Shore of Kauai is a winter surfing mecca, but in
the summer, Poipu Beach produces the best waves. Daily group
lessons are available at Nukumoi Surf Co. which is the authorized
agent for The Kauai Surf School (around the corner). A short
5 minute drive away is also Margo Oberg's Surfing School located
at Kiahuna Plantation Resort.
Among the many surf spots in Poipu, perhaps the most famous
is Brennecke's Beach known for it's prime boogey boarding
and body surfing. Kalapaki Beach at The Marriot in Lihue offers
gentle waves for beginners, while the North Shore's Kalihiwai
Bay and Hanalei Bay is for the Pros. On Kauai, there are nearly
as many surf spots as there are beaches, and you'll be happy
to find that some of the finest are very close to Beachside
Peri Hale.

Scuba
Diving
Kauai's clean, clear offshore waters attract scuba divers
from all over the world. There is a dive shop in almost every
town on the island, so gear rental, air, and instruction can
be easily found. Located right on Poipu Road you will find
Seasport Divers, they offer diving boat charters as well as
Niihau charters which are their specialty. Lessons and certification
for beginners is available and they use top of the line rental
equipment.
Shopping
GROCERIES: Star Market is located in Lihue and has
one of the best selections on the island. Koloa town has Big
Save, Sueko's and Kukiolono's local markets. On Mondays @
noon there is a Farmers Market at the Koloa Baseball field.
Located on the Tree Tunnel road just outside of Old Koloa
Town. This is a must, you can load up on flowers and fresh
island grown produce and a good time is had by all!
There is also a Safeway and Foodland in Kapaa. K-Mart, Borders
and Walmart are also in Lihue. Borders has great island books
and music, K-Mart & Walmart are great stops for inexpensive
tourist trinkets!
Costco has also arrive on our little island situated next
to the Kukui Grove Shopping Center south of Lihue located
near Home Depot.
GIFT SHOPPING:
Kauai abounds with fun places to discover! Koloa Town and
Poipu Beach Shopping center have great restaurants, art galleries,
clothing stores and unique gift shops. The island has an abundance
of small shops that sell items which are hand crafted by local
artists, one such area is Spouting Horn Park, where you can
find some great bargains and see the beauty of a blow hole
at the same time. Another great spot is the Hawaiian Trading
Post owned & operated by some dear friends Don & Lizzie.
They have the largest collection of Niihau Shell necklaces
and some of the most beautiful pearls you will see anywhere.
They have a huge store loaded with anything you could possibly
want!
Snorkeling
Within a short walk of Beachside Poipu Hale you will find
Nukumoi's Surf Co. where you can rent anything you will need
for a day of snorkeling; fins, masks, etc! If you can't find
it there try Snorkel Bob's, a couple of minutes drive away
on Poipu Road. Outfitters Kauai, in Poipu offers scuba and
snorkeling equipment rental, as well as bicycles and kayaks.
Virtually every
beach in Poipu has at least one excellent snorkeling spot.
Just to the right of the little sand peninsula @ Poipu Beach
Park there is a great novice area to snorkel.
Anini Beach on the North shore, offers very good diving along
a 3 mile coastline enclosed by a long outer reef. Inside the
reef, you will encounter a myriad of colorful tropical fish
and several species of coral. At the road's end you will find
Ke'e Beach, and Tunnels Beach, both known for their good water
clarity. For the more adventurous, several boat tour companies
offer snorkeling trips to the offshore reef areas of Poipu
and the Napali Coast.

Tennis
In Poipu you will find several private courts available which
offer daily clinics, round robins and excellent Pro Shops.
Close walking distance to Beachside Poipu Hale is Poipu Kai
Tennis Club (Tel: 808/742-8706) with 9 courts. A short drive
away are Kiahuna Tennis & Swimming Club (Tel: 808/742-9533)
with 10 courts and The Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa
with 4 courts (Tel: 808/742-1234). There are 20 public lighted
courts on the island and over 70 private courts.
Waterskiing
You can enjoy miles of tropical waterskiing along the Wailua
River on Kauai's East side. This is the only truly navigable
river in the State of Hawaii. Equipment rentals, boats for
towing skiers, and ski instruction are available.
Windsurfing
Anini Beach is one of the safest beaches for beginners to
learn windsurfing. An offshore reef creates a peaceful lagoon
in most winds, and on most days, you can see brightly colored
sails and students from two windsurf companies. Windsurfing
at its best is found at Shipwreck Beach in Poipu but is strictly
for very experienced windsurfers. Also for the more experienced
windsurfers, Tunnels in the North Shore is a good bet.
Yoga:
Yoga is suspended for the summer months, it will start up
again in the fall 2007!
Mon., Thurs. & Sat. morning @ 9:00am, Yoga class is given
at the end of the street (Kuai Road) under the ironwood tree
at Poipu Beach Park. This is a wonderful class of which I
personally attend and is geared from beginners to advanced.
All are welcome to come to and enjoy visitors & residents
alike!
